Davis Mountains State Park- Our trip to Fort Davis, TX (Part I)

In early October we stayed in Fort Davis, TX. Never heard of it? We hadn't either until we made plans to go to the McDonald Observatory(working on our post about it). While we were there we felt like we found a hidden gem, the Davis Mountains State Park.

When we first arrived at the park we went to the Visitor Center to pay the small $6 fee and get a trail map. We were planning on doing a trail right by the visitor center but this big tarantula and some of his friends were coming from there...yeah no thanks. So, we ended up doing the scenic drive.

Once we started on Skyline Drive we quickly realized the park is filled with tarantulas.  They were all over the street. We actually had to swerve to avoid hitting them during our drive. I had never seen anything like it.

Really couldn't believe these mountain views were in Texas

I mean from two people living in Texas most of our lives we were pretty surprised we had never heard anything about the Davis Mountains. They were stunning.

We could actually see our  RV Park from the overlook (its in the middle o the pic)

There were a lot of roadrunners there. I felt like Wile E Coyote trying to get a picture of one of them. They really are fast. I finally got a somewhat close picture after following this guy around. Luckily I didn't fall off a cliff or anything. Nice try roadrunner!

We actually left for a while and had dinner and then decided to come back to watch the sunset. We were greeted by some majestic deer.

Then we made our way to one of the overlooks to watch the sunset. Not too bad.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would love to go back and hike some of the trails.

Have you been? If so what did you think? Let us know in the comments below.
